  1. The Trident sounds like a possible game changer with it being multi factor testing... I think you should be our beta tester Jeremy! Interesting that they settled on a titration methodology - my favorite for stand alone testing but I would have thought that would create some challenges for automation compared to a colorimetric assay or some sort of sensor. Obviously, the latter would require some pretty significant R/D.
  2. Yeah, I'm still waiting to see that tank setup! That info from OBD would give me pause... I think I would have too many sleepless nights with a rimless tank that size but, obviously, others have done it. Maybe add a giant floor drain to your house mods?
  3. There is a certain degree of contradiction there but I can see what the commenter is driving at. Then again... I may just be misreading their intent. Wouldn't be the first time.
  4. I do recall this and was curious myself. I found the comment on that linked announcement pretty interesting so copied it below just in case this thread caught some folks attention who might be considering it... Raises some interesting points. Aquarium controllers don't require the sheer amount of processing power apps running on our cell phones do. That's one piece of equipment I have no issues with upgrading every 5-10 years since it ensures a stable platform, given what is at stake. An aquarium controller should be designed to fulfill a number of relevant tasks and to do it efficiently. While it should be flexible, it shouldn't be a swiss army knife. While I am a big supporter of open source and development, I don't think Vertex has a big enough community of programmers to keep up with the potential security risks involved in user-end apps. Open-source software is kept secure through large oversight of a community. I just don't see that happening in this small nitch. Android is a rapidly evolving platform that will require constant updating on Vertex's end. So they'll have to keep up with security updates and bug fixes. And given their past track record with the "beta" controller, I am quite skeptical. I think the Apex or Profilux code base can be more easily maintained by a small team since it isn't a full blown operating system like Android. You can argue that the Reef Angel is a model for this type of platform, but it has a way smaller user base than the most popular controllers, and it's driven by a passionate DIY community.
  5. Haha! That is awesome. Careful though, Holly might come down on you for copyright infringement - looks a lot like the Gil&fin waffle iron!
  6. Wow - the color on those is intense. Nice find Cody - hopefully they grow and split for you quickly.
  7. Looking forward to your writeup in this if it works well! Very promising and cost effective solution if so 👍
  8. Hmm... having lost a tank to majano's before, mine did not look like that and they also didn't expand that fast. True, a bit tricky to tell from the photo but I would lean toward them being something else. Unfortunately, I'm not sure what.
  9. Congrats! We are going to have to start a separate section for all the nanoreefer pics!
  10. Thanks for helping us out Optimus! Look forward to seeing you there.
  11. Lean and mean eh? I should ship you our Desjardin tang and see what you can do with it - it has the mean (or at least bossy) down but not so much the lean. Where do you get your plankton (brand)? Do you do any other feedings for your coral? Everything was looking pretty healthy in there.
  12. Ahhh... first world coral problems. That was a substantial piece - too bad nobody had a giant empty tank they needed to fill. I need to trim some of mine soon as well - stating to shade my montis.
  13. Well - you could build yourself another one. Thought you didn’t want to go that big with glass anyway... or was this for acrylic? Easy for me to say of course 😁
  14. Didn’t make it until the very last minute so missed out on the larger selection but there were still a few of both clam types there in case someone is still looking. Lots of really nice acros as well! I’m on a self imposed coral moritorium until my bank account recovers but there were a lot of pieces I would have liked to take home. 😞
  15. Tempting isn't it! How many tanks do you have now
  16. Hey Brian - do you have a pic of the modified overflow? Curious what you did with that. Glad you decided to get what you really want now that you went to the work of running all the plumbing for a remote sump. Should be killer! If you put it where you were planning would be cool to do a full length built in cabinet/stand.
  17. Sorry to hear about your mated pair but fascinating story/behavior. Thanks for sharing.... looking forward to hearing how things turn out with the second batch.
  18. Lots of fantastic looking items there Jeff!
  19. That is quite the collection! Several things there on my "someday" list 😁
  20. That sounds like fun! Ok... maybe I was mistaken.
  21. Congrats on getting the frag tank online. Looks like you already have some nice pieces in there!
  22. Good eye! I believe you are indeed correct. I didn't realize that the location stayed the same when the name changed as I hadn't made it down there before.
  23. These are all interesting tweaks. I think the 1/4 solenoid would be a nice backup to the CO2 cutoff - this would provide a second level of protection to overdosing the tank in case the one on the regulator failed. Given where I have the CO2 bubble rate, mine shouldn't go too low even if that failed but wouldn't hurt to have an extra layer. A flow detector tied into the controller (like yours) would be sweet but not sure if there is one that will work on mine... off to look!
  24. Yep - PDXmonkeyboy had a thread on this a couple months back. Same thing happened to him when portland bumped up the chloramines due to the water supply switch over and it overwhelmed his unit - does not show up with TDS so was basically adding ammonia to his tank while doing top up and water changes. caused a major algae outbreak and bleached a lot of coral in his case but things bounced back. This is one of those cases where adding prime routinely to your replacement water (as TheClark suggests) could save you some grief at some point but that kind of defeats the purpose of using RO/DI at some level. I am pretty sure that Badxgillen just treats his water with prime/equivalent and doesn't even use RO/DI but he is on a different water source down south.
