  1. If you are either willing to live with the condensation problem or get a sufficiently thick tank they can be pretty darn cool and the idea of collecting your own material sounds really fun. Steve Weast used to have some really spectacular cold water tanks he kept. There are some pics and additional info on the Oregon Reef pages... http://www.oregonreef.com/sub_coldwater.htm I saw these in person back in the day and they were awesome. The boxfish were super cool!
  2. Bummer. Was worth a shot for sure. Sounds like the correction factors are pretty simple anyway so probably not a big deal at least on that point. Thanks for sharing!
  3. Welcome! I love that there is a marine biology course at your school! I know there are some folk on here historically that have kept cold water tanks and could perhaps chime in on the idea. One challenge I am aware of having seen a few is that you typically need a fairly thick (usually acrylic) tank to provide sufficient insulation to avoid condensation. Even small tanks 30 gallons or less that I saw had one inch thick walls. Something to consider.
  4. Just need a long enough cable . Maybe the cat would volunteer to hold it for you
  5. Well that is pretty straightforward! Didn't realize they sold the sensors separately. Wonder if you could figure out the USB conversion and get it to work with their app so you could have things like the auto adjust for submersion etc. Pretty slick!
  6. Welcome back! I took a pretty long hiatus myself and have just had a tank back up for a little over a year. I definitely missed it. Hope you find something that works well for you.
  7. Can you really have too many caps? (just got another one from Kim this week) Well if you see something else in the tank you want let me know. I have plenty of ponape birds nest (really nice) and blue dig but you probably already have those covered.
  8. Sorry to hear that... they were looking so good! Hopefully they bounce back quickly.
  9. Yeah - how are those beauties doing? I thought we were going to "test" how they grew under my tank lights anyway
  10. Ok... you have me tempted. Would be interested in a bit of rainbow stylo and the pink poccillipora. Trying to think of something you don't already have though. I do have some large pieces of purple/grape cap that I could easily break up. Also have some blue polyp green cap if you don't have that already and could probably get a piece off the purple stylo. Unfortunately, most of the acros are still babies but let me know if there is something specific you need.
  11. That is a sweet looking tank Brian... and of course the stand is amazing! I can't recall, is this eurobraced?
  12. Just to support that notion, our green coris has now learned to follow the diamond goby around so that he can poach anything tasty it might stir up from the sand bed. The one that used to be at Seahorse would follow you around waiting for you to tip up a frag then clean off the bottom for you. Very industrious and thorough hunters from what I have seen.
  13. Yes - in fact the February meeting will be in the Kelso area so stay tuned for that. The majority of meeting are closer to PDX - either at local shops or in members homes so there is quite the variety. In the last year, we have had meetings in Tangent, Salem, WIlsonville, Newport, Kelso and several in PDX as we try and accommodate members from as wide an area as is feasible.
  14. Yeah, I think the space savings is one of the big attractions with either the drop in scrubber or a chaeto reactor and potentially the only viable option for those who can't run a sump.
  15. Well, fortunately bristle worms freak me out so I could live without them I doubt many survive the rest of my wrasse wrecking crew anyway (includes blue star leopard, green coris, melanarus, red possum).
  16. This is interesting feedback I had not heard before (was actually looking for these lights previously). Do you know what the issue is? Sounds like you have at least found a way to fix them. Don't mean to thread jack but thought this info might be useful to the OP as well.
  17. I am actually running a drop in my sump right now in combination with a large, chaeto-filled refugium (no reactor) and will be kind of curious how it does. I didn't set up any before/after testing as I was mainly planning to use it on a second, small AIO tank that I don't have set up yet but might be interesting to see what affect, if any, I detect on nutrient control parameters when I remove it from the main system. While this doesn't get to the crux of "which system is better" it could provide some indication if supplementation (having apparently redundant systems) provides additional levels of export. By no means a great data point but, until we have some serious A/B testing we basically can only share experiences and theories and try and extract what useful info we can. Thanks for sharing your observations Andy.
  18. Dang Randall - that didn’t last long! Sorry to see you shut down again so soon but good luck with the sale.
  19. Is that the one that had a bit of a upper lip problem? Glad to see he is doing well if so - seriously considered bringing him home and still would like one. Tank is looking great and the coral seem to be thriving (of course).
  20. Congrats! Cute little guy... guessing he is a bit more substantial these days.
  21. True - can’t even tell they are in water... well except for the fact they are open and still alive. Pretty great shot.
  22. True although you will also find people reverting back to that lighting combo these days. We will likely have a meeting up North again this year (Kelso area) so stay tuned for that.
