  1. I had two drop in digital thermometers on the same tank in the same spot that read 6 (it might have been 8 it's been awhile) degrees apart from each other. Neither lined up with the old school $3 drop in. JME
  2. Mine ate Nori, mysis, rod's food, just about anything, but it's favorite were brains, acans, when it ate the micro's he went to a new home.
  3. I use my return pump to feed my skimmer, but my skimmer is a recirculating variety. I have used my drain to feed a skimmer in the past, same with using the drain to feed a cannister filter to a UV. Being creative is fun, but IME< watch it for a few hours to avoid water on the floor. JME
  4. I used vodka for a few years, have moved on to sugar. I can never manage to keep vodka in the house. My tank takes a packet of sugar as a dose. I pour it into the overflow box in the morning whenever I see some algae popping up. I'm not that exact anymore, I used to be, but this works just as well IME. Andy had a nice thread on the subject that is worth looking up FWIW. HTH
  5. I don't know any jokes but since this thread is getting no responses, I thought I could talk about something different. I mixed some different beverages last night and when I finally did pass out I had the strangest dream. This is a bit embarrassing to admit, but I actually had a dream I was a muffler. I mean who does that. . . When I woke up I was exhausted. I didn't know whether to go to a pyschotherapist or a mechanic! :D :D Get it . . . . exhausted . . . .
  6. I actually do listen to most everything, except country. In the last week my car CD player has played opera, jazz, classical, japaneese traditional, under ground hip hop, punk, rock, classic rock, electronic down tempo, and some Frank. I majored in music in college, guess I appreciate most genre's. I lean mostly towards Jazz and under ground or old school hip hop.
  7. Thanks for the offer I might take you up on it in a few months. I'm really lost on the whole issue. For now I went with the Toshiba. So for all is well. I haven't upgraded the RAM to 8gigsw yet but don't know if I will. This thing is pretty fast. I can scroll through 20mb picture files with no delay. I'm pretty stoked so far. Hope it continues. This sounds corny, but the guy at Best Buy, Jonathon, was so helpful. He knew exactly what I was talking about and steered me in the right direction. Gotta give out some props.
  8. Dude if you need any help or random parts I'm like 2 minutes away. Sounds fun.
  9. Dude you are so above my head right now, you would laugh. I won't be piecing a system together. I'm more likely to buy a system from Best Buy kind of guy. Seems like Laptops are quite nice and affordable these day, so getting one that I could use for both travel and home editing would be ideal. I was looking at this one. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9371556&type=product&id=1218093379440 It can plug into my LCD monitor at home as well which is a nice bonus. I might consider upping the Ram to 8gigs from the get go. I looked at a more expensive model, but it seems this will do everything I need. Apparently it being 64bit OS, and having a dedicated graphics card is a huge plus? I really know very little about computers. Any input you have would be awesome. If you build computers, maybe we should talk. As far as what the pro's are using right now. I have a Dell Inspiron 4550, with 512 DDR ram, and a 80 gig hard drive. I have some type of video card, no graphics card. I believe the computer is a P4. It's been fine until I started shooting outside predominatley and using Cr2 files instead of Jpegs.
  10. I am currently running my skimmer off of one of the two overflows. Saves a pump as well. I've never used a chiller so can't help much there. I don't see how the temp would affect it much in my thinking, but I am often surprised.
  11. Benny my good friend. I fear for the safety of your tank in using this new dangerous pump. As any good friend should I will help you. Just bring the vortech over to my house, and I will run it on my system until I am absolutely sure it is safe for you. It should not take more then 2 years for my thorough diagnostic report. Really Benny I don't mind doing this for you, since you have been such a good friend. Infact I insist.
  12. Don't say I didn't warn you. I'll trade you a roll of paper towels and a bottle carpet cleaner for the vortech.
  13. Interested in one set of the lights if still available.
  14. Pjezeski, just a warning. I don't know if you can trust Benny503. I heard a rumor he has been seen around town with thai lettuce wraps. I hate to say it but, there was even a rumor of peanut sauce. Ya, I can't make this stuff up. I'll save you from dealing with this unscrupulous character, just sell me the vortech instead.
  15. This one looks nice on that site http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883107985
  16. You dream of being a portrait photographer? I've been doing it for about 12 years. It's fun. I photograph mostly families, kids. Lots of babies. I shoot 500 - 600 high school seniors a year. Mostly I work in that world. I have photographed many models, done magazine shoots, fashion shows, catalogs, spreads, portfolio's, hair shows, advertisements, etc. At the end of the day, I pay my bills by photographing real people. It's pretty awesome. Thanks for te tip on the website, I will check it out. So far I have only been to fry's, best buy, and Dell. I need something that is built, will work, and has a gaurentee. Basically idiot proof, cause well. N'ough said. I have a nice monitor, I have some calibration software, a mouse, a Wacom, etc. I think I just need a new tower, hopefully. I haven't been a student in 4 years, I don't think they'd take my ID anymore. DOH!
  17. Thanks for the compliment and the advice. Honestly, I haven't even sprung for CS4 yet. Last I bought was 2, but it is soon time. I am also looking into ACDSee3, might be easier for file management, and use CS4 for conversions. I have never treid any of the adobe user groups. Thanks for the tip.
  18. Hi, I'm in need of some help designing my new desktop system. I will be using it 90% for photowork. I want something that will downlaod large amount of photo's from a memory card fairly quickly, I shoot 40Gigs on average a weekend. I also want something that will process Raw files into Jpegs quickly using a program (CS4 or C1) designed to do so. Would like to be able to flip back and forth between picture files without a delay, my file sizes can be up to 20Mb/ Right now I am spending bout 20-30 hours a week just on work flow, trying to cut that way down. Is there a target number I should be looking in terms of processorer, Ram, or video cards. I really know very little about systems. Thanks
  19. Benny, you don't want the vortech. Vortechs are crappy pumps. Since Benny has changed his mind on the vortech, I got dibs . (Or I guess I could be next in line in Benny backs out for any reason).
  20. IMO I would not go with a 4 in a 29g. At a certain oint current will damage corals, even SPS.
  21. I have no AC. I have a fan blowing across the top of each tank. I am also rotating gatorade bottles filled with frozen salt water. Lights come on at 9pm. If the tank gets above 80F today, I might extend the airintake line from the skimmer and run it through an ice chest. Last resort for me is taking off the canopy and laying 20" box fans on top of the tank blowing down. But so far so good. I did evaporate about 4x my normal amount yesterday, but all of the tank inhabitants are happy.
  22. They are kinda noisey and have a hard time with the restart IME. I read about and then tried making bumpers with rigid airline tubing to reduce the noise and prevent them for restarting backwards, but they were still noisey and would freeze every day or two. JME They do make controlable ones but they are much more expensive. HTH
