markdadof2
OK, so does anyone have a turbo snail that likes to knock over all their SPS corals? I am getting tired of re-gluing everything back to the rocks after this bulldozer of a creature goes on a coral tipping rampage! Michael7979
YEP!! Price to pay for their service. As the coral lays a good base it will stop.
snowpunk
I have a few big ones but they stay clear of most of them. my urchin does all the damage. Last night he had a big bush of xenia, 2 turbo snails and 3 hermits(wife) He gets on my nerves. He grabbed a frag of birdsnest the other day and set it down on another coral. birds nest is all but dead now(threaten)(threaten)(threaten)
andy
Yeah, urchins are cool but a big PITA. That's why I got rid of mine.
pledosophy
My turbo got banished to the sump after it was knocking over entire rocks, not just frags anymore. I do have smaller rocks though (no wise cracks!)
kriswaters
My turbo got banished to the sump after it was knocking over entire rocks' date=' not just frags anymore. I do have smaller rocks though (no wise cracks!)[/quote'] Oh you left that wide open (laugh). [language filter] snails...as expected all of my margarite snails have died off. Knew it would happen and the hermits do love there new digs. Unfortunate though, I lost one of my "big coral and rock knocker downer" in the form of a big zebra snail...those hermits are exicited about their new digs (and made quick work of any snail flesh remaining!). The tank is doing well, but all of the rock stuck so close together limits the ability to get in and get rid of poop and junk. The psuedo closed loop cant penetrate the substrate under the rocks...I am in Nitrate Hell. I am vaccuming up my sand with every water change...filtering for snails as I go. I am sure the nitrates are a cause of the newest snail demise. Sorry, a little off topic, but it was a "snail story" (whistle) Kris
pledosophy
How high are the nitrates? They would have to be really high for it be killing snails IME. Can you adjust your flow to get the stuff out of the rocks? That way it will save you some maintence. Your tank is newer right? Sometimes it takes some time for them to get stable. kriswaters
Maybe they were "old" snails...does anyone know the life expectancy of a snail? Any how...hard to say on the nitrates as I don't have an accurate test. I am picking up some tests this weekend however. As for flow...I have my to Hydors pointed directly at the rock and a closed loop blowing on them... I will go with less rock and more open space in my next tank. markdadof2
Good point for me to remeber about not packing the rocks in too tightly. I will keep that in mind for my new build after the first of the year. I wonder how Benny's tank is - he had the rocks jam packed in that tank! ha ha! mrgreenthumb
yea your tank is packed full.....where do you put the corals??
andy
Why not try attaching frags to the backs of the Turbo snails?
kriswaters
LOL...Traveling Coral...love it
mrgreenthumb
Why not try attaching frags to the backs of the Turbo snails? lol I wonder how long that would last...
markdadof2
I was thinking more along the lines of attaching about a 10lb rock to the top of the turbo snail..CRUNCH! I may have to go trade this guy back in to the LFS.
mrgreenthumb
do it now!!! if he hasn't messed your tank up yet he will!! Its just a matter of time!!! Those critters are to strong for their own good!! Plus there are plenty of other snails that are equally efficient, IMHO turbos should be left in the ocean they are trouble makers!! andy
Yeah, but they eat red turf algae. IME trochus don't
mrgreenthumb
Good point....does anything else?? I don't think i have ever come across red turf algae. I guess you gotta do what you gotta do.
kriswaters
I had red turf algae...margarite snails gobbled it up...their life span short though in our warm tanks. Kris
andy
Red turf algae sucks... not as bad as bryopsis, but it definitely sucks. Good to know about the margarites, kris -- tyvm.
pledosophy
Maybe they were "old" snails...does anyone know the life expectancy of a snail? Margarite snails can live over a hundred years in the wild. Astrea snails can live to be very old as well.
TheGooseWhisperer
Does "red turf algae" resemble 3 or 4 days of stumble growth on a man's chin? If so it looks like I have some of this. Its localized to a small frag with a few shrooms. Would the best course of action be to remove the shrooms and toss the rock?
