SuncrestReef
Four months ago I added a RR Tropic Thunder Monti to my tank. Here's how it originally looked: And here's how it looks today, with a lot of new growth encrusting the rocks: Any idea why the original section changed from pink/orange to a dark purple? All the new growth appears to match how it looked when I got it. I wonder if the new growth will also darken to purple over time?
The ReefBox
What lighting did it cone from? Often a change from lighting will change colors as well as nutrient levels I’ve noticed color shifts going from MH or T5 to LED. new growth is usually always lighter then darkens with time matching colony

The contrast between the new growth and the mature section is kind of cool though.

Blue Z Reef
Have you watched the video tour of JF’s place? He uses primarily blue spectrum and actinic for his systems and small amounts of white. I would guess that if you put it under all ATI B+ and Reefbrite XHO for 10-12 hours a day the color would change back. I believe that’s what his systems primarily consist of.

Would make an interesting experiment if one had a shared water system with different lighting (Holly’s for instance).

If anyone would like to give me two free frags, I will put one under LEDs and one under T5s and report back about how my two new frags are doing. This might be especially useful for those with high dollar, signature corals. I'm just here to help.😉 3

Snappy
Your lighting doesn’t look consistent in your pictures. Not sure if it still captures the colours of your coral change or not, but I note a couple inconsistencies that might come into play: the top picture has a light orange coloured (montipora?) coral and the lower picture shows the same one in red. The purple coralline algae on bottom left looks light purple, lower picture it’s black. Is it possible that your lighting has changed? also, I’m not as experienced, but wondered if having multiple corals of the same species but different sub species would tend to change another’s colours? No, the lighting hasn’t changed. The two original photos were taken with different cameras and different white balance settings. Regardless of the camera issue, the color change of the coral in question is unmistakable. For example, just look at all the new growth encrusting the rock around the original round section of the frag and notice that it's all pink like in the original photo, but the main part of the frag has changed to purple. That's the color change I'm asking about. I’ll see if I can reproduce the white balance settings from the first photo to get a more apples-to-apples comparison, then you’ll see a more exact change in color.
