Oregonsaltnpyro
Hello, my name is Mike and I live in Hillsboro Oregon. I grew up with salt and fresh water tanks as a kid. My main passion/hobby is fireworks(shooting them and making them) but I find myself spending a lot more time with this hobby. About 6 years ago I got back into it with a 110 gallon saltwater tank. I have fish and inverts but no corals...yet. I currently don’t have any friends that are into this hobby so I was hoping to make some by joining this site. I know enough about this stuff to keep things alive and healthy without frequent water changes or heavy tank maintenance but I am looking to improve my knowledge as much as I can and do things better then I have been to give these guys the best water/life that I can while they are living in my tank.

Welcome Mike! Glad you gave the context for your user name - I was trying to put that together when I saw your post come through. Sounds like you have got a good handle on the core tank husbandry so hopefully moving into coral won’t be as step a learning curve as it can sometimes be. Lots of experienced and knowledgeable folk on her who are always willing to provide tips and advise so feel free to ask questions. Also can learn a lot just be reading old threads - lots of wisedom packed away in there. We happen to have our next meeting tomorrow in Salem. They are a great way to get to know other members - everyone is welcome.
Oregonsaltnpyro
Nice to meet you Alberta! Yes, I’m very much looking forward to getting into corals. I have read a bunch of books on it but am still unsure of lighting to get and if I need to add more gear to my tank like dosing pumps for chems I don’t currently add to my tank now like calcium, iodine and others.. Fortunately, I live very close to Paradise Corals which is owned by an awesome dude named Bret who is extremely knowledgeable and has an impressive memory all while being so easy to talk to and get along with. So I’ll be picking his brain for advise before making the move.

Lots of SPS gurus on this board as well if you decide to take that on. Good luck!
Oregonsaltnpyro
Thank you all for the warm welcomes. I also belong to fireworks club and we use a forum just like this site and it’s a wealth of information with lots of people willing to answer my questions. I plan on asking plenty! I am having an issue with this site. It doesn’t take my password when I sign in the next day. I get locked out after two failed attempts then wait 15 mins and reset it. It’s like Groundhog Day. Which makes sense because my birthday is on ground hog day. Does anyone know how to get this fixed? Thanks, Mike

You definitely found the right place to make some reef friends......if you find time to make a monthly meeting it's hard not to leave without making new friends. Worse case scenario you will leave with free frags of something. And since your in Hillsboro....next time your going to fire something up into the sky let me know, i wouldn't mind checking that out 😁
Oregonsaltnpyro
Nice to see you too on here! Are the meetings always in Salem or do locations change? The frags sound fun but I don’t know about how well they would do with an hour plus car ride home?? Unfortunately, the closest shoot site location my club uses is in Chahalis, WA. It’s one mile from the lucky eagle casino which has reasonable hotel rates. But I still let you know when there’s a shoot planned. I would shoot stuff in Hillsboro but I just need a good location that’s not so noticeable by the cops what was the name of that starfish I got from you this week? I wanna look him up and get some info about him.
albertareef
Hey Mike, The meetings tend to rotate between Portland and points south and sometimes north. We have members spread out all along the I5 corridor and from the coast to bend and even farther east so we try and move them around a bit. I don’t think we have a location nailed down for the next one but keep an eye on the meetings and events threads for details.

Bring a small little Tupperware and put some hot water in it before you leave the meeting.....heated all the way home. That star fish you got came in the last batch of live sand we purchased. From his looks and where the sand came from I'm going to guess a Mud Brittle star..
