Jack-the-reefer
Looking at the betta falls tank today got me thinking. It could be fun to have a little contest to see who can set up the coolest pico tank on a budget. I've seen similar things done in other forums and it's always cool to see what people come up with. Here's what I'm thinking: -Water volume less than 5g -Budget of under 100$ for equipment. -Everybody has a month to gather equipment. Then three or so months to let the tanks grow in. -At the end, we put it up to vote and the crowd favorite wins. Anybody interested? Could be fun.

albertareef
If enough people are on board I wonder if we should start a thread in the competition/growout forum for this? Sounds fun but I won't, unfortunately, have time.

Brian Tesch
Would be very down. I also would be down to throw in some petty cash, 5-10~ to create a pole for first, second and third prizes.
Lexinverts
Doesn’t a 10 gallon count as pico?

Sorry dude- Another term gaining popularity is pico reef, which is used to refer to the smallest of nano reef aquariums. Most online forum polls set the range of approximately 10 litres (2.5 gallons) and below as pico reefs. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reef_aquarium#Pico_reefs

Jack-the-reefer
Looks like we have 5-6 people interested. I'll leave this up through the week to make sure everyone has a chance to see it. I'll look through old threads and find out the rules and ideas that seemed to work the best too.

Gil&Fin
I might give this a try. I expect it will be quite humbling to try to maintain a tank that size. People tend to think bigger is more difficult, when it is just the opposite.

Gil&Fin
Ill do it, But does the Equipment have to be store bought? If I know Jack, that would be a big no. He has some of the most creative pico/nano builds I've seen. And is it total system water volume or just the tank water volume? Yes, this is a very good question. I would like to plumb the pico into my 500 gallon system. It might help a little keeping the parameters stable. Would that be okay? ; ) Sent from my SM-G928P using Tapatalk

Jack-the-reefer
I'm going to say definitely no on the store bought. And probably under 5 gallons total volume. It's too easy to just plumb it into a bigger tank.

Jack-the-reefer
I think I'm going to keep it under 5. I want to see how creative people can get. I'm going to make an official thread at the end of the week. It looks like we have enough people that are interested.
Jack-the-reefer
Just for a little inspiration. This is a 1.5 gallon vase with only a heater and airstone for water movement. Google maritza reef vase if you want to read more on it.
