timmylucas
Anyone try black sand? What is your thoughts ?? Anyone know of any place that carries it locally ?
icepikbiker
I have seen pictures of people using it and makes a lot of colors pop. I've heard that white sand reflects a lot of the light back up to the corals.
JManrow
I suppose the main precaution is to avoid using a magnetic algae scraper near it. From http://www.livesand.com "Black Beach Sand is a 100% all natural product that is composed of minerals that erodeand collect near beaches. One of black sands (mineral sands) major mineral components is calledmagnetite. Magnetite is a non-water soluble mineral that is attracted to magnet scrappers. Thismineral is totally inert in an aquarium environment and has a dark coloration giving black beachsand its natural appearance." pnkrcklives
I did a black sand tank once. It was great. Just watch for highly magnetic sand. The sand I got from wet spot in Portland. It was called Tahitian moon. Mixed with a bit of white sand to seed the tank. Worked out great.

timmylucas
Yes I have it in my nano and it works great. (Petco brand) Did you have any issues at all ? Like a large amount of cloudiness or having it stick to your mag float ?
timmylucas
Purchased the black sand from petco and it's amazing. It looks great with the lights, it looks natural and I barely had to rinse it. tank was clear within a few minutes after pouring it in. Bombertech
Excellent, that's what I used too. If your rock is clean you shouldn't get very much white mixing.
