Derbird
I am in love with my Vertex skimmer. Quiet and efficient, plus very well constructed. For SPS dominated tanks you will want the best and biggest skimmer you can afford and fit. They like clean water DOH!
Micah
I'm running this on my 75. http://www.coralvue.com/regal-170sss-protein-skimmer
Saltwater newbie
Swc 160 cone
old salt
I just leveled up from a coralife to a vertex and I love the construction and how quiet it is but I don't get that super dark skimate that everyone talks about, probably me and not the skimmer though. reefnjunkie
I don't get that dark skimmate, IMO half the battle is won in the pump- that being said I'm a fan of anything SWC-IME
reefergreg
I was looking at getting the swc 160 cone. Im currently running a old reef octopus nw 150 but you can hear that pump running in the nexted room, so its time for it to go.
reefnjunkie
The 160 cone is a great skimmer, you won't regret
Mitchell
One more vote for SWC. Another good brand is Eshopps.
Bicyclebill
Siimz161. Very tight footprint. Works awesome
Arminius
Switch the pump on your existing skimmer to a Reef Octopus BubbleBlaster and it will be a whole different animal.
reefergreg
I have the old design from 2007 that needs the slip fitting pump.
Blue Z Reef
Bubble Mag curve series are really nice and super quite, was very pleased with mine (great pricing on them too). I have a RO Elite now, pulls like a train! I would do your research and find whatever draws the most air and has a nice design. Cone skimmers are more efficient so I'd look at those mostly. As most have said, BubbleBlaster pumps are great and pull some serious air with minimum power draw.
reefergreg
For those that have the vertex omega 130 have they been a very sensitive skimmer for you?
scubasteve
I am running an SCA 302 cone skimmer, its the same thing as an swc with the same attman 2600 pump. It is super quiet, and works great! Cost is almost half of an swc 149.00 with free shipping
rworegon
I have a vertex 150 that is virtually silent and dies a great job. The vertex takes a while to get dialed in but once you get it they are awesome. I also have a skimz 181 on my frag tank. I had to replace the impeller but once I got that it runs great as well. The vertex is running on my 90 gal reef and the frag tank is about 80 gal.
czczcz
For those that have the vertex omega 130 have they been a very sensitive skimmer for you? I have had no troubles with the 130 myself. Took a little tweaking in the beginning but has been in the tank for 8 months now, with no issues, really quiet. I have it on a 72, with a 20 sump. kriz2fer
Go with coralvue. Unless your gonna spend big bucks coralvue makes a good skimmer.
reefergreg
I have been looking at the aquamaxx co1 for my tank which is 75 with 20 g sump with heavy coral load you think this will be big enough or go with the co2 or em200 ? Bicyclebill
I had the aquamaxx em150 for a while and it worked great. It was a little bulkier than the skimz 161, and I think my skimz has lower amp draw too. I'm not a big believer that a cone is better. Having a tapered neck does the same job while allowing larger volume in reaction chamber.
