finch6013
Looking to know how people put a bulkhead or similar plumbing adaptor in the side of a 55g barrel for a spigot.
Drew
I would think you would just use a bulkhead and a PVC ball valve
finch6013
Will a standard bulkhead seal on the curved side of a barrel? that was my concern
Liquid Hobby
You're looking for a rubber uniseal bulkhead. Google is your friend!
Topher
here is apossible sugestion/drawing on how to do it. i beleive a 1/2 inch or even a 3/4 inch bulk head will fit though the top opening
finch6013
I have no problem getting a bullhead through the top opening. I can even make the hole larger if I need to, no problem. I just want to make sure that the bulkhead I use has a good seal on the round side of the barrel. I will look up the uniseal
grassi
You can either put a bulkhead (with some silicon around if you like) or an uniseal. I used both with no issues. My water station is using 3/4 bh
finch6013
I would prefer a bulkhead over the uniseal. Did you have to silicon your BH for it to work?
jonas
i did have to silicone mine because the curve of the tank will not make a flush seal.
racefan
I just went to my local plumbing supply house & got a bulkhead with a rubber gasket & used some tub & tile caulking on the outside. It's not the prettiest but it works & it's what I had on hand.
Liquid Hobby
BRS sells uniseals and I believe they even have a video on how it works. They are specifically made for curved surfaces. You just have to make sure the hole you drill is exactly what the uniseal size asks for as it's a very tight fit.

NoobtoSalt
I'm guessing you will need a pump in the water anyways to mix your salt up, you might want to check to see how Robert at OIAB has his setup. I wanted to buy his 55 gallon drum when he was breaking down some of the tanks at his house but he took it to the shop. It does not have a bulkhead on it from what I remember but it's a really sweet setup. At some point I plan on doing the same for my water changing station. Algae
If you are planing a small spigot to be installed, ie. 1/2", you should be able to seal with a standard bulkhead on a 55 gal drum circumference as long as the drum had some give in it to reduce the radius slightly in the area of the bulkhead. finch6013
The barrel has thick walls so I don't think it would give much. I talked to the tech at BRS and they recommend a uniseal.
Mohaynow
I used a 1/2" uniseal on my 55 gallon drum and haven't had any issues with it. They fit really tight and form a great seal. I got a couple extras lying around if you need one. heres a pic
