bswe22
Does anybody in Eugene have what it takes to drill some holes in a tank? Thanks Bryan
bswe22
OK, anybody have the drill bits needed to drill a hole for a 1" bulkhead? Bryan

Algae
Hey Bryan I think I can help ya there!
newfisher
Brian,if its that 10g sump...be very slow and no pressure! I heard people have built wooden supports inside to reduce the flex of the thin wall smaller tanks. Use a continueous water supply like a garden hose and have Algea help you. If you guys can do it after this weekend, I can or will help you too. What about a tank drill demonstation next Saturday for the meet n greet? Ps...I have wood, the 2x4 kind!
Algae
Ouch!! 10 gal. Very tricky according to garrett. He broke a bunch cause of the thin walls. I once gently placed a bathroom tissue on one and it cracked.
bswe22
C'mon, you guys are scaring me. We can do it. I can wait until the meet and greet. We can use my tank as the demo. Bryan
Algae
Here is a quote from Garrett: "Thanks! I think it will be nicer in ways for sure. The problem that I have had thus far is how thin and fragile the 10g tanks are. They are cheap, so replacing them isn't expensive I just worry about them breaking during circulation and with livestock in them. I don't think it will be a problem, but if any break once I start filling them up, I will likely take them all out and just stick with thicker glass tanks like the 20l and 20h. I think I have a total break count of 6 tanks now. 3 from drilling and 3 from plumbing and bulkheads being too tight. My dad helped me and didn't quite understand how fragile they were until he had broken a few lol. Overall though I really like being able to have seperate tanks." bswe22
Well after that, I am back to the drawing board with how to set up this tank. Bryan
7Max-GTE
What happened to the glass shop idea?
bswe22
They said they can't do it. They need a aflat piece of glass. It also sounds like I might have more problems than just drilling. I am going to figure out plan B. Do you get the job at A.S.? Bryan
newfisher
Build a custom size acrylic one for your space..I have weld/glue and multicraft locally can supply the material.
Algae
How much space do you have for the sump? Why do you need to drill? I would not hesitate to drill a 20L.
bswe22
How hard is it to build your own tank? Do you have the pieces precut and then just glue them together? I am thinking of modifying the stand to accommodate a 20 gallon long. I will have to move the center brace in the back and it will have to be extended out about 3 inches. Algae
Not that hard. The pieces can get to be expensive, however. You might want to put out a WTB in the classified section and see if someone has a sump that will fit?
newfisher
Post the internal dimensions of what you need and you can remove the upper cross brace and topload it. Someone should have a plexi bio ball style that you can use live rock or foam in.
undrtkr_00
You have a tap plastics nearby? Check the scrap bin. Chances are decent you'll be able to find enough to make something the size of a 10g. I broke JManrow's 10g sump with just a little tweak of the plumbing. Still feel bad about it. (sad) They are easy to break.
bswe22
What is a "tap plastics"? Is it a store or somebody that makes things out of plastic? Bryan
Algae
Tap is a plastics supply store in Portland. I remember they used to sell resin for way overpriced amounts. Course we were buying by 1,000 gallons at a pop. We have Multi-Craft on Madison down here for acrylic. They give you a lecture if you say plexiglass. So it is fun to say plexiglass to them. 7Max-GTE
Thats like the lectures I give customers if they ask for a sucker-fish or a nemo-fish. And yeah, I got the job at Aqua Serene. Come visit me!
bswe22
I will be sure to ask them for "plexiglass". HA HA Bryan
JonBoy
I did the drilling successfully one but then broke it with the bulk head so be careful even after the drilling
bswe22
I did the drilling successfully one but then broke it with the bulk head so be careful even after the drilling I have changed my plans. I am going to alter the stand a little bit so I can fit a 20 gallon long tank in it. I will then have enough room for a submersiable pump and not have to drill the tank at all. I am still going to drill the 38 gallon display tank. Bryan
newfisher
Did you see the drilled 10g that joel has?
bswe22
Did you see the drilled 10g that joel has? By the time I was able to check it out after your text, it was gone. Thanks
