Phelpsius
I'm looking to start adding some fish in the near future. All I have planned right now are 2 clowns, a hippo tang and down the road a mandarin goby. My tank is 75 gallon + a 20 gallon sump/refugium. I was thinking of adding a school of small fish to the tank and wondered what suggestions you all might have. Here's what I'm looking for: 1. 4-5 fish that will travel in a school 2. stay small 3. Docile 4. Inexpensive 5. Cool looking 6. Low maintainance as I'm new to the hobby Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, Mike
jgf86123
chromis are about the only schooling fish id put in your 75, if you had a 125 or bigger, id recommend either a school of anthias's or a school of watanabei angels, or other angels from that genus
Phelpsius
I did see a picture of a black-axil chromis in one of my books that looked pretty cool. Any idea how big they get?
jgf86123
the only problem is that they're not that docile
jgf86123
id go with the blue reef chromis personally
andy
Problem with Chromis groups is the maintenance cost -- you have to buy a few each month to keep up with attrition. On the plus side, you don't have to worry about the CUC starving.

R-3
Talbot Damsels. I just bought 6 from Garrett and for the most part they all hang out together.
Phelpsius
Purple firefish are cool looking but seem kinda pricey. The pajama cardinals and talbot damsels seem to be less expensive. Thanks for the suggestions! Any more out there?
Phelpsius
I've heard that damsels can be kind of aggressive. Is that the case for Talbots?
jgf86123
i will never have another damsel of anykind, especially a talbots, anywhere near my tank, i put 2 talbots in my tank and within a week our supermale lyretail anthias was killed by them. they are evil vile creatures who should be left in the ocean imo

Phelpsius
Red striped cardinal sound cool but I couldn't find to much info on them. Do you know about how much they might cost and a place that sells them?
Mr S
Fiji chromies. Big, more hardy and I heard that there poop is like natural fertilizer to corals. I have 3 in my school tank and they hang out with each other. Makes you realize people have them in a tank for a reason.

That seems a little odd. I would recommend buying them small like mine (about the size of a nickel) Also that they are towards the last of fish that are introduced to the tank. jgf86123
My talbots were both less than an inch long, they were the last fish added the time, our anthias was a real laid back fish, loved him, he just chilled all day, ate 3 times a day an just was real chill
Phelpsius
Thanks for your help eveyone. After all the advice Im leaning towards the Fiji (blue-green) chromis. Sounds like they travel in a school, are inexpensive, cool looking, not too aggressive, stay smallish, are easy to care for and, as an added bonus, might "fertilize" your coral. Thanks again for the advice and thanks to the PNWMAS site managers for making discussions like this possible. Mike
