nwcoralfarm
I had one of my Finnex titanium heaters go out on me last week. around 1 month after the warranty expired (6 months). Now I am back to shopping for a new one. My question is this, does anyone know of an actually reliable heater that you can get more then 1 year out of? It seems that as soon as you step up to 800+ watts that the quality drops right through the floor. What's your experience?
JManrow
I have a Won Bros. titanium that I have been running daily since 2002 without any problems. I had a Finnex titanium last me almost a year before it stopped heating. At least the thermostat on it didn't stick and overheat the tank! I have also had to return a couple of ViaAqua titanium heaters. If you truly want something reliable, go with a high quality heater controller. I would probably go with something like http://www.jbjlighting.com/prod-true-temp.html that has a separate temperature probe.
nwcoralfarm
Thanks J I currently have a couple nice controllers that have yet to give me any issues and are pretty accurate. I will take a look into the won Bros. I have a smaller one of theirs that runs great.
kilmca
I run a 1000w Won Brothers heater that has worked without a problem for about 1.5 years. It has it's own controller but I also have it on an Aquacontroller so it can't overheat the tank.
madmike
If you can find any of the 1000w fireplug heaters they are rock solid. I have 2 that I got off from SWF when Steve Weast broke down his huge tank. He had them on that for years and 1 is still going strong on my tank (other for backup just in case). nwcoralfarm
That does sound good Madmike, thanks for the tip, but after a short Google search I think it might be next to impossible to find one.
JManrow
This might be worth a try. http://www.aquaneticsparts.com/?gclid=CKynzPCC0J4CFR4HagoddQtFrw

Yeah, and when you're not busy heating your tank it works great for cracking bank vaults. Seriously though I think I seen one of these on Mission Impossible. CA2OR
oops....right...sorry. Let me see here....who was it. CA2OR
"Load: 800W * Load Fuse: 10 Amp. Finnex Digital Titanium Aquarium Heaters : New .... Limited lifetime warranty. Fully submersible for fresh and saltwater"
nwcoralfarm
That is what I have actually. And that limited lifetime is very limited, I think they only mean that it is good for the life of the heater, so when it dies so does the warranty. They will actually only guarantee these for 6 months.
CA2OR
ah....I will find out who makes mine and get the info over to. What about the Jebo's?
Algae
I saw this posted on the WA DC MAS forum: straight titanium heating element, ranco controller, emergency cut off of the controller with my AquaController. Thats how I did it. The Ranco could hold my temp easily within 0.5 degrees, I didn't have to worry about the crummy thermostats that they put on heaters, and I had a fail safe in case my Ranco went south. madmike
Yah... might be overkill but that is how I roll in this hobby! I was lucky enough to stumble upon the two fireplugs off of steves old tank and picked them up for a steal at $65 I think for the pair! (Thank you Patrick!) The last time I saw these sell used they were going for 1-200 each!
