gradth
I read recently on here that you should not rinse new aragonite sand? I have about 60 lbs that I am gonna use on my 55. I rinsed the same stuff before I put 140lbs of it into my 180. I read it can be a good source of calcium? Any thoughts.
finch6013
I have heard this also but do you really want your tank to be cloudy for a week? also it takes a while for that to be removed from the tank so it will get stired up easy. I would rinse and rely on calcium to come from my salt and dosing if needed.
finch6013
I tried not rinsing once and it took about two weeks to settle and even then it was stired up easily.
ThePremiumAquarium
If it were me, I would always rinse it if I could.
Rick
Rinse it. It can add calcium to the tank however while we usually struggle to get enough calcium there is a point where there is too much. When I added 40# of Southdown sand recently my calcium shot up over 600 ppm but the alkalinity dropped to about 7dkh. Getting the alkalinity up after the calcium goes so high is more difficult than I anticipated. (Low alkalinity also drives the ph down) From here on out I will be rinsing any sand I add first. gradth
Sounds good, I always have in the past but read it somewhere and thought I would ask. Thanks folks.
