tdkee1
I am new to the saltwater world and will be setting up a 75 gallon tank. It already has a 30 gallon wet/dry with a 550 gph pump with one return on the top left corner of the tank. I am also planning on adding a large protein skimmer. Should I also use the 2 canister filters I have from a previous freshwater setup? From what I understand, canisters filters are nitrate factories. Should I skip the 2 Fluval 305's? They are filled with biomax ceramic rings. Do you guys/gals use canisters on your saltwater setups?
orion
I am new to saltwater also. I have a 95 gal display, 40 gal refugium/sump, and an external skimmer I am not running any canisters. From what I understand it kind of depends on if you are setting up a reef or fish only tank.
tdkee1
cool. it seems like most people don't do canisters on saltwater tanks. I think I'll skip the canisters and convert my wet dry to a sock filter. if im right, the wet dry systems seem to be useless if I plan on having lots of rock? But keep one handy if you want to run one for phosphate and nitraite's.
CA2OR
I use mine for carbon mostly...gonna be hooking it back up here shortly because it draws through my uv sterilizer.
pledosophy
The only time I use a cannister filter is as a prefilter to a UV sterilizer. MOst systems don't really require UV's IMO so whether or not your going that route depends on what you want your system to be. Generally I do not like cannisters because I do not like cleaning them. They do need to be cleaned every week or two to avoid detritus build up which will lead to nitrate rise IME. HTH
CA2OR
So you would run the canister before the UV? I had mine pulling through the UV into the canister
