Hog Head
Would it create too much flow if I replaced one of my Koralia 1's with a 4?
finch6013
yes. I have one in my 75 and the current reaches from one end of the tank almost to the other. go with a K2 maybe even a three if you need alot of flow
reef165
I say try it, there are people putting over 100 times turnover in there tanks so theres no reason why using a #4 in a 29 gall wouldnt be ok.
tidalsculpin
Do you have sand? If you do not then, I say go for it! With sand you will be annoyed and have the stuff flying all over especially if you have sugar sand.
pledosophy
IMO I would not go with a 4 in a 29g. At a certain oint current will damage corals, even SPS.
ThePremiumAquarium
If it were me I would use a couple of #1's or just 1 #2. I think that will be just the right kind of flow needed. It will still be plently of flow even for sps. I wouldn't mess with #3's unless you have just one in there and are really careful on placement of your corals. snowpunk
I think a 4 will be like a constant tidal wave in that tank. I have one 3 in my 75 and I'm going to add another but a 4 is too much push from one pump in my opinion for even a 75. It would be just crazy in a 29. impur
I bet it would be perfect. I ran 2 seio 820s in my 29gal. Currently I have the 29 setup as a frag/QT tank with 1 MJ sureflow mod ~ 1600gph and 1 MJ900. Everything is loving it. I'm running 2 K4s and 1 MJ sureflow mod in addition to my return on my 75 and I have no problems with my sand. I still have spots that need more flow. It just seems like there are some dead spots.
Hog Head
I have been planning on using six #4's in my 100 gal 72x18x18. It seems excessive to me but it is what has been recommended by my lfs. Thought about trying one of them in me 29g but I have been worried about too much flow.
impur
Just try it. If it doesn't work take it out.
CCR
I hope the surge of sugar sand doesn't act like sand paper and tear the crap out of stuff or blind fish
Rick
I think it could be done if you are creative with the placement. Direct it across the tank at the opposite wall or corner so it doesn't kick sand up and then maybe add another one mid tank that intercepts the flow to kind of break it up. The biggest concern I would have is at 30" it will still have some flow and may wrap back around enough that no matter where you place it the sand may still get kicked up. Movement at the top shouldn't be an issue as long as the water isn't being splashed out. (In fact the gas exchange would be good)
impur
I know it can be done, i've done it. I had almost twice that amount of flow in my 29gal with southdown sugar grained sand. It didn't move at all. Here it is with the one seio 820 and a mag 7 for return not throttled back. I found this was a perfect amount of flow roughly 1400gph It was a fun tank, great for learning when i first got into the hobby.
temperhead
i got two 4's in my 55 gallon and i wish i had more!
reef165
Yea' date=' I have the sugar sized sand. Thought about that too.[/quote'] the great thing abought the sugar sand is that once it hits the bottom its pritty packed and harder to move than reg fine crushed coral! Hog Head
Wow! It was like a sand storm/tsunami! I have so much rock and coral in that little 29g tank I don't know how much water is actually in there. I had it in the top left rear corner and it was way too much flow. Hog Head
I just gave my #1's a vinegar bath and the flow appears to have doubled.
